Common questions

Can I camp on Crown land for free in Ontario?

Yes. Canadian residents can camp for free on most Crown land in Ontario, for up to 21 days on any one site in a calendar year. After 21 days, move at least 100 metres.

Do non-residents need a permit?

Most people who don't live in Canada need a Crown land camping permit north of the French and Mattawa rivers. Ontario lists some exceptions, such as campers under 18 and people renting gear from an Ontario outfitter. Check ontario.ca for the current price and rules.

How do I know if land is Crown land?

Open the map and tap the spot. Crown land is green and private land is yellow. In Ontario the card also checks Crown leases and licences, mining claims and the township you're in. Lines are approximate, so stay well inside and watch for posted signs.

What about other provinces?

Each province has its own rules for camping on public land. The map shows public land in every province and territory; check that province's rules before you go.

Does the map work with no signal?

Yes. Save the area before you leave and the map, land colours, roads, your camps and the GPS dot keep working with no cell signal.

This is a planning aid, not the law. Land lines are approximate. Crown land can be under lease, posted or behind private land. Check fire bans and the Crown land camping rules on ontario.ca (or your province's) before you go, and leave your site cleaner than you found it.
